July 31st: The Australian navy has reportedly drawn up plans for the first Australian-made aircraft carrier. The plans involve four ships that would dwarf the navy's last aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne, scrapped more than a decade ago, The Daily Telegraph Reports.

According to two studies commissioned by the Naval Material Requirements Branch, obtained by the newspaper, the project would cost between $3 billion and $4 billion depending on the design. According to the report, the carriers, known as littoral support ships (LSS) or multi-role auxiliary vessels (MRA), would be capable of troop carrying, heavy transport, hospital-ship duties and tanker functions.

It says the carriers would also carry helicopters and in the case of the bigger LSS, either FA-18 or Harrier vertical take-off fighters.
